Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was a college student when she became fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house of an individual juror. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
